British Airways issued a warning to passengers on Friday, March 21st, as they warned many of them that they would not “travel.” This is because London's Heathrow Airport is currently closed after a fire at a nearby current substation.
Thousands of homes have lost power, and more than 100 people have been evacuated after a transformer inside Northhide's electrical substation fired in west London. Today, more than 1,300 flights are confused, including many BA flights.
In a previous post on Twitter X, BA said: “Due to a blackout in London’s Heathrow area, London’s Heathrow Airport is currently closed, so as a result, customers traveling from Heathrow on Friday are advised not to travel to the airport until further notice.
“This clearly has a big impact on our operations and our customers, and we are working to update them as soon as possible to update their travel options in the next 24 hours or later.”
Heathrow is the UK's largest airport, with over 83.9 million passengers driving through the terminal in 2024. A Heathrow spokesman said:
“While firefighters respond to the incident, we have not made clear when electricity will surely recover. We have no choice but to close Heathrow until 23HH59 on March 21, 2025 to keep passengers and colleagues safe.
“We are hoping for significant disruption over the next few days and passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens.
“We will provide updates once more information is available on reopening operations. This is a shame for passengers and we want to reassure them that they are working as hard as possible to resolve the situation.”
