Boeing forecasts 20 years of global demand for around 2.4 million new commercial pilots, technicians and cabin crews
– Continuous focus on innovative training and career development is key to addressing the shortage of pilots and engineers
– AI advances, virtual reality and mixed reality technology enhance and enhance training to transform the preparation of the air workforce
Oshkosh, Wisconsin, July 22, 2025 – The Boeing (NYSE:BA) project, spurring changes in emerging markets and fleet mix, has made the ongoing demand for aviation personnel into a project as the global commercial fleet changes to meet the demands of the flying masses. Boeing's 2025 Pilot and Engineer Outlook (PTO) expects the industry to need around 2.4 million new aviation professionals throughout 2044 to meet the long-term increase in air travel.
Boeing, who released the 20-year forecast each year at EAA Airventure Oshkosh, said that commercial personnel will need substantial employment and training to maintain a global commercial fleet, including:
660,000 Pilot 710,000 Maintenance Engineers 1,000,000 Cabin Crew Members
“As commercial air traffic demand continues to outperform economic growth and the global fleet expands to meet demand, our industry will continue to fly our fleet safely and efficiently by supporting the workforce development of airlines around the world.” “The industry is investing in technologies that include mixed reality. This is an immersive blend of physical and digital environments that increase hands-on learning and situational awareness. Boeing supports its customers with digitally advanced aviation training products and services to meet their needs.
The PTO will be holding the Boeing Project until 2044:
Two-thirds of new personnel deal with replacements due to attrition, but supporting the growth of new staff commercial fleet demand is driven primarily by single ad-isle planes in the past few years.
The PTO includes these forecasts for industry needs through 2044.
