Millions of Britons fly to more Sunny destinations this summer, but one frequent flyer shares her top tips on how to reduce the airport's security process a little bit. With airport queues often appearing endless, holidaymakers will want to avoid these fashion fakes that could extend the ordeal.
Tiktok user and veteran traveler Melanie (@comehangout_melanie) said that these four items could “be held up by security.”
The first and perhaps most obvious tip is to avoid wearing anything made of metal when possible. Standard procedures at airports around the world for passengers to pass through metal detectors.
When these sensitive machines detect any type of metal object, the mirror reports that they are pulled aside for additional safety checks.
These devices are designed to pick up potentially dangerous items, but can easily be caused by harmless things that you've forgotten to remove, such as jewelry, hairpins, and loose changes to your pockets. Melanie advises that it can be “pain,” so avoiding this whenever possible will help speed up the entire process.
She also warned of wearing shoes that are difficult to slip off. She said:
“There's no place to sit or sit to get back on. If people are in a hurry, if you're taking a long time to undress your shoes, you'll have a very frustrating line behind you.”
Some UK airports may require passengers to remove their shoes during a security check, especially if a metal detector is triggered. This is a standard security procedure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.
While certain clothes may be comfortable for long distance flights, Melanie suggests that some items are best left in the house or packed into suitcases. These items can cause problems during security checks or attract unwanted attention.
She said: “Don't wear clothes with lots of pockets and details. Including cargo pants. There are a lot of zippers that can be a problem, but if you actually store things in those pockets you're in line and you have to dig into the different pockets and clear everything!”
Melanie also recommends avoiding baggy clothes such as loose pants, shirts and flowing dresses. She argues that these outfit options are “more likely to lead to a puttdown” than more equipped clothing, suggesting that baggy items could be used to “hidden things underneath them.”
What to expect from UK airport security?
There are a few steps airport staff need to take before dumping their jets during their holidays. According to the Gov.uk website, these safety checks include preparing your boarding pass for testing. You do not need a passport at this stage.
When carrying liquids to your baggage, each container must not exceed 100ml. These should be placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag measuring about 20cm x 20cm, below 1 liter.
UK airports hope to dispose of the 100ml liquid rule this summer. Until then, however, passengers passing through security are still needed to limit and bag fluids in their bags.
While queuing, you'll be able to take the plastic bag out of your bag and get ready to enter the security tray. Keep in mind that liquids include items such as cosmetics, toiletries, and hand sanitizers.
Empty your pockets, coats, surveillance and belts, approaching the front of the cue, are ready to be placed in the tray, along with other metal items. You may be asked to remove your shoes, other clothing or jewelry before passing through the security arch or scanner.
Electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, hair straighteners and other items must be removed from their baggage to be individually X-ray.
