The 15th International Association for Air Traffic Safety Electronics (IFATSEA) Africa Regional Conference concluded in Kampala with a strong call for innovation, cooperation and regional independence in aviation safety and technology.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Fred Bamwesige, director of Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), said the meeting is not only rich in technical discussions and awareness sessions, but also a great platform for sharing innovation.
A key highlight of the conference was the collective agreement on strengthening the capabilities of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Officers (ATSEPs) to support the future of aviation on the continent.
The conference focused on the role of digital transformation in communication, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ATM) systems, as well as the emerging impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

Representatives agreed to the need to explore cost-effective technologies such as drones (unmanned aerial vehicles systems – UAS) for flight calibration.
The use of drones, traditionally implemented using expensive imported aircraft, promises to revolutionize how African countries manage their aviation navigation infrastructure more affordable and efficient.
The Regional Committee was now established to apply AI, develop concrete frameworks to protect aviation systems, and develop mainstream drone usage in African aviation businesses.
Bwesigye reaffirmed UCAA's commitment to innovation and continuous development. “We are particularly humbled by the praise we received for our efforts in modernizing our systems and technology training. UCAA is fully committed to empowering ATSEPS and supporting initiatives tailored to global best practices.”
“As we close this important chapter, let us continue to develop the momentum and partnerships that have been established here.
