The Avalon Australian International Airshow 2025, which will be held from March 24th to March 29th, will showcase the spectrum of civil and military aviation at Avalon Airport, Victoria, Australia, and is set to be the largest in history. With 902 exhibitors and around 350 aircraft on display from 28 countries, the event promises to attract the public, industry experts and aspiring young minds.
With a notable highlight of this year's airshow, Drone Shield reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Australian Defence Force (ADF) drone racing team. This partnership means collaboration that expands beyond sponsorships focused on practical engagement within drone racing environments. Oleg Vornik, CEO and Managing Director of Droneshield, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying, “The ADF Drone Racing Team represents the pinnacle of high-performance drone operations and we are excited to continue supporting it at Avalon 2025.” This collaboration will enable the merger of expertise in both offensive and defensive drone technology, making it important to shape the future of drone operations.
Furthermore, the ADF Drone Racing Association, led by Wing Commander Kielin Joyce, pointed out the importance of this partnership, claiming that drones are invaluable in pushing boundaries that can be achieved not only in competitive settings but also in real-world applications on the battlefield. “By testing cutting-edge counter-drone technology against some of the most skilled drone operators in defense, we create a unique development loop that will enhance Australia's overall defense capabilities,” Joyce said.
The Avalon International Airshow serves not just a platform for military engagements, but also serves as an educational catalyst for students. Over 7,500 secondary and higher educators, together with educators, have signed up for the event's career day, focusing on the Australian Defence Force's path to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The day will feature insights into the various career opportunities available within the defense sector, encouraging young people to consider the future of aerospace science.
Scott Winchester, director of the Australian Air Show, highlighted the ADF's commitment. “Our ADF is always looking forward to being part of this incredible event and can showcase what we do every day with the Australian masses. This sentiment is widely shared as the airshow serves as an important interface that connects the citizens to the defence forces, highlighting both innovation and operational realities.
In addition to the attractive display, the Avalon Airshow features a robust flight program that shows off a variety of aircraft. Notable flying displays include high-speed jet fighter jets such as the F-35A Lightning II and FA-18F Super Hornet, as well as military transport and reconnaissance aircraft. Ground displays include cutting-edge aero-medical evacuation capabilities and innovative applications for drone racing. The troops also have the opportunity to introduce the public to military working dogs, including puppies in training, further enhancing the general interactions at the event.
Safety of aircraft operation during airshows is paramount. Recently, the Tactical Aircraft Arrest System (TAAS) successfully tested emergency procedures at Avalon Airport. The system utilizes wires and hook harnesses similar to those of aircraft carriers, allowing for rapid deceleration and stopping of military high speed jets during landing under emergency situations. Flight Sergeant Anthony Archow explained, “Avalon Airport is one of the few civilian airfield locations that can support this system and the first non-defense site with upgraded concrete pads.” He explains in detail how the system works and shows that in order to respond quickly to potential emergencies, he can equip the rig within 4 minutes and reset within 5 minutes.
Avalon Australian International Airshow is committed to being a groundbreaking event as it focuses on aviation innovation, collaboration with defense and community engagement. The results of this six-day showcase are aimed at enhancing Australia's aviation capabilities while inspiring the next generation of aviation enthusiasts. As AMDA CEO Justin Giddings said, “There's a special atmosphere in Avalon week and there's a sense that we're involved in something very unusual. There's a sense that the entire aviation community is residing in Avalon for the week. Every day of the event reveals new opportunities and relationships that serve the broader goals of aerospace development and community interaction.
