If you're flying this summer, you may be missing out on a key step. Bank balances and skin can pay the price. We focus on our passports and luggage when we board the plane, but many of us forget ourselves. According to Elizabeth Japal, expert at Cult Beauty and Skincare at Derma Lab, people should always wear SPF with people who emphasize that this is “essential” whether they're on a holiday, back to the UK or on a plane.
Elizabeth emphasizes that this is especially true when you are sitting in a window rather than in aisle seats. “Many people don't notice that UV exposure actually increases at altitudes, and plane windows don't block all UVA rays. This is the main cause of aging in immature skin. They are essentially sitting next to an enlarged sunbed.”
This, combined with the low humidity in the cabin air, makes the skin more vulnerable to dehydration, dullness and damage. “It's not just the way you get off the plane. Regular exposure to this type of environment can result in a sacrificing skin health over time,” she said.
Elizabeth urges you to prepare before stepping into the airport, saying this applies to everyone, whether you're a short flight or a long distance. And yes, you should wear SPF, even if it's cloudy and grey.
Elizabeth's Checklist
1. Do this before you fly
Her number one rule urges people to cleanse before they fly. “It's essential to start with clean skin. Your face is already exposed to the drying effect of the cabin air. Any remaining makeup, SPF, or contamination will only clog your pores and contribute to inflammation.”
2. Moist fog
You will need to fog your face both before and during flight to stay hydrated. Airplane recycled air can sap your skin into moisture within minutes. Doing this during a flight will prevent dehydration and give you instant glow.
3. Hydrated serum
“Serum is a drink of water on your skin. Layering serum underneath the moisturizer maximizes hydration while enhancing the protection of the antioxidant,” explains Elizabeth. Choose a travel-friendly option packed with niacinamide, vitamins C and E. It brightens the skin and soothes the inflammation and shield from oxidative stress. Perfect for dodging free radicals during flights.
4. Moisturizing and SPF
Yes, even indoors need to use SPF. 2 People assume that SPF is not needed on planes, but UVA rays penetrate the clouds and glass – and they are aging,” says Elizabeth.
5. Pack these
Pack your essentials in a clear bag for the top-ups like this:
Face mist
Lip balm
Hand cream
SPF touchup
6. After landing
Once you land at your destination, take the time to pip the calming serum and then use a moisturizer that will restore the barrier. And of course, always reapply for your SPF before stepping into the sun. You can do this while you wait to embark on the plane. “Post-flight skin rituals are equally important. We will reset and support your skin as you move into a new climate or time zone,” advises Elizabeth.
