The Air India Boeing plane was “well maintained” before it fell a crash a week ago, killing all but one of the 242 people on board, the airline said Thursday.
Indian authorities are still elaborating on why at least 38 people have been killed as the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner listened to the ground in a western city in Ahmedabad.
When investigators tried to retrieve data from the plane's black boxes (cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder), the airline said no issues were detected on the jet prior to the disaster.
“The plane was the last major check in June 2023 and was well maintained,” Air India said in a statement.
“The engine on the right was overhauled in March 2025 and the left engine was inspected in April 2025. Both the aircraft and engine were monitored regularly and there were no issues prior to flight,” the airline said.
The London-bound jet exploded into a fireball when it crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad after takeoff.
The first check of Air India's Dreamliner since crashing “was not revealing any major safety concerns,” the country's civil aviation regulator said Tuesday.
India's air investigation forces said on Thursday that the investigation is “currently progressing.”
“Major recovery efforts, including gathering document and evidence from the site, have been completed and further analysis is ongoing,” the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said in a statement.
Air India said 169 Indian passengers, 53 British people, seven Portuguese and Canadians were on the flight.
The airline said Thursday that the pilot is a skilled flyer.
“The flight was led by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, an experienced pilot and trainer with over 10,000 hours of flight widebody aircraft,” he said.
“First mate Clive Kunder has more than 3,400 hours of flight experience.”
While investigators are trying to piece together what went wrong, families of dozens of victims are still waiting for their loved ones to be identified.
As of Thursday, 210 victims had been identified through DNA testing, State Health Minister Rachesh Patel said.
