Air Greenland plans to introduce narrow body jets to its fleet with the introduction of the Airbus A320neo, which is scheduled for delivery at the end of next year.
The airline is to take Twinjet under a six-year lease from Carlisle.
It says it will be “adjusted to Greenland's condition” prior to its peak season before being served in spring 2027.
The aircraft will be used to operate services between Ilrissat and the Danish hub of Copenhagen, located on the west coast north of the capital Nuuk.
Air Greenland says the aircraft will complement the Airbus A330-800.
Carrier says Ilulissat's new runway will allow for increased capacity of the A320neo.
Getting a new aircraft directly from Airbus would have taken six or seven years, said Chief Executive Jacob Nitter Sorensen.
“So I chose to lease the (A320neo) when the new international airport in Ilrissat opened and gain economic flexibility as the route is still new,” he adds.
Air Greenland will retrain De Havilland Dash 8 Turboprop pilots for the new Airbus. Dash 8's domestic business will not be affected by the introduction of Airbus.
The aircraft acquisition has been “always part of the strategy” after the jet's traffic was adequate.
