Cote D'Ivoire's national airline has announced that it has suspended flights between the country's largest city, Abidjan, and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Air Cote D'Ivoire started the route in 2022, initially offering services four times a week. The service was operated as an extension of the airline's route to Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The airline used the Airbus A320neo, with 16 passengers in business class and 132 passengers in economic class on the route. Air Cote D'Ivoire cited operational reasons for the outage of services.

    Abidjan-Johannesburg route

When Air Cote D'Ivoire launched its Abidjan-Johannesburg service, it was the only airline flying non-stop between two cities. South African Airlines previously operated flights between Abidjan and Johannesburg, but was in the midst of restructuring and had stopped the route.

South African Airlines gradually restored its old route, including between Abidjan and Johannesburg, offering three flights per week with the Airbus A330.

Travel News reports that Air Cote D'Ivoire is scheduled to resume service this October. However, African aviation analyst Sean Mendis said demand and yields on routes are not desirable for carriers.

“The Johannesburg-Abidjan market has too much capacity for Aircourt Daiboir and South African Airlines to serve it, the latter with an A330 wide body.

That said, Air Cote D'Ivoire is looking forward to delivering two Airbus A330-900Neo aircraft this month. Widebody jets are used to expand the airline's intercontinental route network. The carrier will launch scheduled services in Paris and Beirut.
