Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with Archer Airlines, which can pave the way for all electric air taxi networks throughout the region
Archer's goal is to transform urban travel and replace 60-90 minute commutes with safe, sustainable, low-noise, cost-competitive electric aviation taxi flights with ground transport, estimated 10-20 minute.
Under the first contract, a fleet of so-called “midnight” aircraft will be deployed to Africa's largest airlines under the Archer's Launch Edition program, which costs up to 30 million US dollars.
The Archer's Midnight is a pilot four-seater aircraft designed to provide quick, continuous travel with minimal charging times between flights.
The companies work together to build an air taxi network, while Archer will provide the airline with a team of pilots, technicians and engineers as well as back-end software infrastructure and front-end booking applications.
“We are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are pleased to announce that we are offering a stake in the company.”
“The partnership with Archer Aviation is an important step towards introducing cutting-edge EVTOL technology into Ethiopia. Together, we aim to redefine local travel and create new opportunities for efficient and environmentally friendly transportation.”
Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (EVTOL) aircraft typically use power to hover, take off, and land vertically.
Archer has announced the launch program February 2025 It can demonstrate the capabilities of midnight aircraft and promote public acceptance to create a scalable commercialization framework for safely deploying aircraft in the early recruitment market.
Currently, we will work with Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority to safely operate midnight.
“Last month, we announced Abu Dhabi Airlines as a customer for its first release edition — today Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said:
“Africa presents untapped opportunities in terms of advanced air travel with a variety of compelling use cases we explore together. We are proud to be taking a big step alongside Ethiopian Airlines.”
In addition to faster commutes, the hope is to explore other use cases, such as ecotourism.
“This partnership with Ethiopian Airlines represents a transformative step towards bringing sustainable and efficient aviation mobility solutions to Ethiopia and the broader African market.”
“We are committed to working with leading partners to unlock the possibilities of EVTOL technology. This is just the beginning of a new era of aviation in Africa.”
