In recent years, the African aviation scene has been flying in a whole new way. Airlines across the continent modernize their fleets, expand their networks and provide services comparable to the global giants.
This progress has not been overlooked. The prestigious World Aviation Award, often referred to as the “Oscars in the Aviation Industry,” recently revealed its rankings for 2025, introducing the best airlines based on passenger satisfaction.
The award, hosted by SkyTrax, has been decided through a passenger survey of the world's largest airlines, along with travelers from over 100 national voters between September 2024 and May 2025.
Ethiopian airlines remain the gold standard and have once again been named the best airline in Africa. Known for its vast global network and efficient operation, the airline has earned the highest honors in onboard catering for Best Economy Class, Best Business Class and Best Business Class in Africa.
SkyTrax CEO Edward Plaisted noted that the consistency of the return winners indicates how much passengers value reliable and high quality service.
Just behind the Ethiopian air was Mauritius, which steadily climbed the rankings and became one of the most respected airlines on the continent. In 2025, it ranked second in the SkyTrax rankings. Famous for its warm hospitality and sophisticated service, the Mauritius national airline connects the island to its major destinations in Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.
