The small and beautiful European cities seem to have been drawn from the “fairy tale page.”
Located in the Alsace region of northeastern France, Colmer is known for its old town, architectural landmarks and museums.
Surrounded by vineyards, traditional houses in the city, canals, flower displays, cuisine and famous wine, it is loved by tourists.
Despite its 67,000 residents, Colmer retains the “country town” vibe. This contributes greatly to its appeal. The streetscape also had an impact on the Japanese animated film Howl's Moving Castle.
The wonderfully preserved historic centre is classified as a “protected area” and has benefited from careful recovery and continuous improvement for over 20 years.
The streets of the old town are lined with shops offering “made in Alsace” products, including food, table accents, textiles, decos, accessories and soft furniture.
The merchant's house in colorful wood frames distinguishes Colmer. Among them are Colmer's oldest Adolf House and Pfister houses, built in the 16th century, with ornate windows, richly painted murals, and a long wooden gallery.
Another must-see is the majestic home of your head. Built in the 17th century in the German Renaissance style, it is decorated with 111 masks and spectacular three-storey Oriel windows.
The area where the Lauch River canal, which previously used as a district for butchers, Tanner and Fishmongers, intersects is now known as “Little Venice.”
Over 1,000 lights enhance urban architecture. They are lit up on Friday and Saturday nights and every night at major events such as the International Festival, the Regional Alsace Wine Fair and Colmer's Christmas.
The city also lies on the wine route of Alsace and considers itself to be the capital of Alsace wine. The wine route is 110 miles of roads, crossing the area's major wine production areas and with 37 wine-growing communities.
Colmer also considers itself to be the capital of Alsace wine. It produces some of the world's most famous dried Rieslings and the highly aromatic Gewürztraminer wines.
TripAdvisor reviewers were called “must-see destinations” like “stepping into the fairy tale page.” In particular, visitors recommended Little Venice and the Gingerbread Shop.
