The 190-mile road trip route across South Africa is seen as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts with a passion for exploration. The route runs from Mossel Bay to the mouth of the Storms River, travelling through historic towns, botanical gardens, beautiful beaches and parks packed with biodiversity.
Garden Routes showcase the diverse ecosystems of South Africa, such as forests, lagoons and mountains, with decades of experience in the travel and car rental industries. Rental Centre Crete CEO added a route. “There are plenty of opportunities for wildlife discovery and you can see whales, dolphins and elephants. Must-see stops include the stunning lagoon in Knisna, the suspension bridge in Chichikama National Park, and Ostritch near Oumun.”
Travelers can hike the Coastal St. Blaise Trail in Mossel Bay, enjoy George in historic Timbertown, and explore the botanical gardens.
The town of Knysna is recognized for its food and two large outcrops of rock called heads.
Plettenberg Bay has a stunning beach with sandy coves and heavy-duty cliffs, and just 50 minutes away is Storms River Village (the end of the route) with a suspension bridge.
In the forest of Tsitsikamma you can try zip lining between 700-year-old trees, absailing, kayaks, bungee jumps and swimming.
Animal lovers will want to explore the Robbery Nature Reserve, the home of the colony sealing, and the birds of Eden, the world's largest free flight aviary, home to over 3,000 exotic birds.
Wilderness National Park has wetlands and forests, and is home to plenty of exotic birds. It is also known for its walking trails, named after the local Kingfisher species.
If you want to see African penguins, you can limit the slight detour to Stony Point. If whale watching is yours, look for the spectacular creatures of Hermanus.
Adrenaline Jankaree has Dragon Dune. It is said to be South Africa's longest and fastest sandboard ride, making it suitable for beginners.
Anapliotis suggested planning at least five days to properly enjoy the comfortable route all year round.
He said: “Road travel offers special freedoms that are difficult to find anywhere else. For decades in the car rental industry, we've seen how a good road trip can turn a normal holiday into an unforgettable adventure.
For a summer trip, aim to avoid crowds while enjoying the pleasant weather, aiming from late May to early June or September. ”
