Croatia is quickly becoming one of the most popular European destinations, with things like Dubrovnik portraying over a million tourists each year. But as larger crowds spike in prices, many are looking for cheaper alternatives.
Luckily, Croatia's western neighbor is just a short distance from Dubrovnik itself and has been named as an equally beautiful, “promising” destination and one of Europe's most valuable hotspots for the British. According to a new report from Mintel and Eurochange, the Eastern European country is one of the cheapest options this year when it comes to flights, three course meals and beer costs.
According to the report, a three-course meal for two people costs £38.61, while domestic beer costs just £2.32.
According to Skyscanner, a flight to Tivat (TIV) in April costs just £92 on a street flight from the way home from Gatwick Airport, and you can add a hotel for just £74 per night, including a stay at Hotel Astoria.
For comparison, for a trip to Croatia, Brits are expected to spend between £43 and £86 on two two course meals except drinks at a mid-range restaurant in Dubrovnik, a mid-range restaurant with up to £6.60 domestic beer. Meanwhile, flights using EasyJet for the same period in April are around £91.
The Montenegro bucket list is long, but the Express is below some of the must-see destinations.
The stunning coastal town of Kotor is located between cliffs and picturesque bays, and has earned a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list thanks to its blend of natural beauty, rich history and vibrant culture. With its maze streets, historic churches and charming squares, Timeout has named it the town, one of the most beautiful places in the world.
St. Triphon Cathedral, dating back to 1166, is a spectacular example of Romanesque architecture, home to an impressive collection of religious artefacts. Meanwhile, the ancient walls extend to the hillside nearly three miles to the fortress of San Giovanni.
Seaside town temperatures can reach 34C in the summer and are easily accessible from several major UK airports. Home to a line of superyachts, gorgeous boardwalks and fashionable apartment blocks, the British may wonder if they have arrived in Monaco rather than Montenegro. It's a great place to spend a few hours perusing the store.
For those looking for a more relaxed beach holiday, Montenegro also boasts a stunning coastline. It is known for its crystal clear waters and sea dance festivals, including Jazz Beach near Budova, known for its long and summer events, and Burjarika Beach further south. Other notable beaches include the picturesque location of Sveti Stefan and Becici Beach, part of the resort area.
According to Laura Evans Fisk, head of digital and engagement at EuroChange, “It offers Croatia's less crowded alternatives, similar quaint towns, gorgeous beaches and stunning coastlines, but about 20-30% cheaper.”
