Derbyshire has reaffirmed its reputation as a desirable county. One of its attractive market towns is named after the top location in the UK. The prestigious Sunday Times Best Placesto Live List was released in 2025 and features a list of 72 extremely popular UK locations.
One of the seven Midland locations featured in the guide released on Friday (March 21), Wirksworth slightly missed crowning the local winner, with Warwickshire's Ilmington taking the top spot. The town is frequently visited by drivers traveling along the busy B5023, but many may not realize that it is a treasure trove of hidden gems: independent shops, pubs and restaurants surrounded by historic towns. Wirksworth is aptly described as “quirky” that endures the “Quirksworth” nickname in favor of the “Quirksworth” nickname, according to the Sunday Times.
According to the guide, “Wykworth lives under the nickname “Quirksworth.” “There's a family, down scissors, a creative type of bohemian mix, and I'm drawn to the artistic, alternative, community-focused atmosphere, and the picturesque scenery around every corner.”
The review continues. “The High Street is dotted with trendy independent shops, cafes, restaurants, Tuesday markets (there is the farmers market on the first Saturday of the month), and lively pubs. It's a magnet for the family's eclectic mix.
“Main Street has trendy boutiques, cafes, restaurants, a market every Tuesday (there is a farmer's market on the first Saturday of every month), and a lively pub that adds the town's unique charm.”
With so much to do in one town, it's obvious that Wirksworth will make a list of top tiers. The Sunday Times post continued. “The Red Lion, an 18th century coaching in, hides a micropub/record shop that hosts Synthenite, Blues Night and Cheese Night every Tuesday. There's also a Northern Light Cinema for those who enjoy an Art House movie night.
The judges have personally visited each location and assessed various aspects such as schools, transportation, broadband speeds, cultural offerings, access to green spaces, and high street vitality.
Helen Davis, director of the editorial project and the perfect place for a live editor, explains:
Davies continues: “This allows us to identify what residents really appreciate about their area: outstanding schools, rapid trains, stunning homes, picturesque countrysides.
“In light of overwhelming global events, it's nice to recognize many things worth coming closer to your home. From small acts that brighten up everyday life, such as a daffodil-filled peak or a volunteer-run cafe for dementia, to bigger initiatives such as repair cafes and new railway stations.”
