Brits desperately need holidays to recover from the stress of planning a dream escape, new research reveals. 40% of adults say the week leading up to departure is the most stressful time of the year.
Despite enthusiastically anticipating a sunny break all year round, an astounding 66% are overwhelmed by work during the prep stage of the holiday. In 31%, this overload of responsibility weakens their excitement as they are too much on their plates.
A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that baggage (29%), house cleaning (13%) and required documentation arrangement (10%) were top stressors before the holidays.
More than half (52%) of those polled admitted they could only relax on their way to the airport. However, due to the overwhelming amount of preparation required, a significant 16% have opted out of holidays completely.
Many of these meticulous plans are intended to prevent accidents such as returning home to wilted plants.
To reduce this stress, National Express has partnered with travel blogger Vicki Flip-Flop to offer a “escape hack” for a relaxed countdown on your holidays.
Vicki Flip Flop, a Vicki Philpot from Southsea, is recommended to adopt a calm routine before your trip. This includes lighting up a short stretch session, a cup of herbal tea, or a soothing candle.
She explained: “Many people find themselves juggling long to-do lists, from planning a trip or closing their work to cleaning their homes for the return. The pressure to create the perfect holiday experience covers excitement and people are overwhelmed rather than enthusiastic.”
Ed Rickard, Network Director at National Express, commented: “Whether you pack the right items, organize your travel documents, or have all the necessary bookings in place, you worry that something goes wrong when traveling on vacation.
National Express is increasing Easter trip bookings to major UK airports by 11.5% compared to the same time last year. Ed added: “With hundreds of frequent coaching services between and among the UK's major airports, holiday makers have one less worry, and great coach drivers are taking them to the airport terminal doors.”
