Several groups have come together to write open letters pleading with tourists away from the Spanish island “deeply concerned” about Mallorca's overtourism. The pleas make its residents stand in favour of themselves for the “worst summer in history” of Mallorca.
The group, shared in Mallorca's Daily Breaking News, shared concerns about recent statements made by local politicians and hoteliers. They had “great irresponsibility,” denying “obvious reality,” and further promoting the arrival of domestic and international tourists. The open letter aims to introduce “the true circumstances of our island” and sue for the individual responsibility of visitors amid the “non-existent” liability from the Balearic local government and tourist lobby.
“Dear Tourist,” the open letter begins. He previously stated that tourism has once been a source of Mallorca's pride, but has become “our biggest problem.”
The group argued that Mallorca has been “abused at unimaginable limits, leading to the collapse that we are suffering from now.”
This letter holds the doors of hoteliers, politicians and real estate investors.
The letter argued that despite civil society mobilising on the streets and demanding that politicians regulate the situation and prevent “major disasters,” the reality of the situation has been rejected, and that tourism for Majorcan continues to be promoted in both new and established markets, including the Berlin Fair.
“Their only goal is to increase the number of visitors and generate more money for the minorities on an already completely oversaturated island,” the letter continued.
The letter then cites published data to showcase the size of the problem. “Every year for all island residents.”
“If Malorka is an independent state, it will be the second absolute growth in the last 40 years, with an increase of 84% and India has only surpassed its 91%.”
The group angrily explains that the use of the concept of sustainable tourism in Mallorca is “inhumanity,” and that it is “not far from the truth.”
“Malorca is not a paradise they sell you,” the group told tourists directly. “The local population is no longer kind to be angry, as the land we love is destroyed and many of us are uninhabitable, as many of us are destroyed and many of us have to leave the island. Put yourself in our place!
“It's time to stand up. Our leaders don't listen to us, so we, the residents, ask you. Don't come. We don't need more tourists. In fact, you are the source of our problems.
“Local people say: enough. Stay home!”
