Famous for its stunning island getaways, Greece is a major destination for horde of holiday makers seeking summer bliss. Of the approximately 6,000 islands, only 227 live there, each offering a unique charm and atmosphere. However, Greek natives warn tourists and encourage them to avoid certain popular destinations. On Reddit, locals said: “I was born and raised in Greece. Avoid Mykonos, Santorini and other tourist destinations.”
They question the value of spending a lot of money on taking pictures of Santorini's iconic sunsets and its picturesque hilltop houses, saying, “Yes, I want to take pictures of Santorini's beautiful sunsets and see the picturesque houses on the hilltop, but do you really want to spend a lot of money?”
“And I mean a lot of money. We use Greeks to avoid those places due to their insane prices and generally call them tourist traps. Greece has so many different islands that you can visit. I would recommend avoiding these two like a plague.”
They continued: “These places are very expensive at the basic items and in my opinion they are perfect for a 3-day stay.”
Mykonos and Santorini are famous as some of Greece's most expensive islands due to their extremely popular. Especially during the summer, they attract overnight tourist hordes and cruise passengers stopping by on day trips.
While many people have encouraged visits to the Greek capital, Athens, according to one local social media, spending your entire holiday in the city may not be the best idea.
They said: “Seriously, don't spend your entire stay in Athens by visiting Greece. Take a bus and travel, or go to nearby cars and ferries and hops on the island.”
