Spanish tourists and residents, including the Balearic and Canary Islands, are being urged to remain vigilant amid the rapid spread of fraud. According to Spanish police, shoppers in particular are being targeted using 50 euro banknotes that were fake to seduce unsuspecting victims.
This scam is most frequently reported in shopping centre parking lots and busy streets. The con man places fake bills under the windshield wiper of a parked car. When the driver returns, they could leave the car to check it out. At this point, the criminal moves the victim.
In a few seconds, valuables, including your handbag, cell phone, and even the car itself, can be stolen – the car keys are left on the ignition.
The scheme has been reported in the past, but Spanish police have pointed out concerns over the rise in litigation in recent months, Canary Weekly reported.
Authorities are urging drivers to remain cautious and think carefully before responding to anything unusual in the vehicle.
Instead, they need to stay inside the car, lock the doors, and do further research before moving to safe places such as police stations and populated areas.
It is also recommended that you do not leave valuables such as phones, wallets, and handbags in your car, which are the main targets of thieves.
Another favorite trick used by Spanish criminals is to stop the driver and tell them they have a flat type.
