Ghana and Canada signed the first bilateral air service agreement, allowing designated airlines to operate 14 passengers and 10 cargo flights per week between the two countries. The agreement, which was finalised in Montreal on March 5, 2025, aims to strengthen connectivity, trade and tourism ties. The agreement allows Air Canada to introduce direct flights to Ghana, but Ghana still has its own domestic airlines, so it is positioned to take advantage of the benefits of increasing international air access.
The agreement is expected to strengthen economic links as bilateral trade reaches USD 380 million in 2023, encouraging promotion of tourism exchanges. Enhanced connectivity supports logistics, boosts business travel, and attracts Canadian visitors to Ghana's cultural and natural attractions. Cargo operators also benefit from increased trade efficiency. As Ghana focuses on modernizing its aviation sector, the deal presents an important step towards positioning the country as a regional aviation hub and expanding its presence in North America.
