The Zanzibar Tourism Commission (ZCT) has announced the official launch of the Waste Management Program, which will begin on July 1, 2025.
This initiative is an important part of the larger green Zanzibar and sustainable tourism campaign highlighted by Dr Hussein Ali Mwiniri.
The campaign highlights the important need for ecologically responsible tourism to maintain the natural beauty of Zanzibar and to maintain its appeal to tourists around the world.
” Zanzibar tourism thrives with our unique natural and cultural assets. However, sustainable practices have been an option for a very long time. We are committed to ensuring that sustainable practices are essential to ensure continuity in Zanzibar's tourism sector,” says Arif Abbas Manzi, Director of Tourism, Zanzibar.
After the campaign began, efforts have been strengthened to raise awareness about the need for sustainable tourism.
Several channels were used, including local leadership, media outreach and quarterly stakeholder meetings with representatives from the tourism sector.
These activities sought to educate and encourage tourism companies to adopt eco-friendly practices, particularly wasteful management.
Many hotels and restaurants follow campaign guidelines and show their commitment to environmental management.
“If we don't act now, we risk long-term harm to the environment and the economy. We aim to build a Zanzibar where the expansion of tourists is balanced with environmental responsibility,” Manji added.
Despite intensive education and public awareness initiatives, some institutions have failed to adopt sustainable waste management techniques.
The new initiative requires tourism companies to: Provides staff training on correct garbage sorting, recycling and disposal techniques.
The initiative also ensures that all waste streams, including organic waste and recyclable items, are properly separated and stored in the facility, and contracted with an authorized waste collection provider to ensure prompt and professional waste disposal.
