Jet2 discarded two of its summer 2025 routes from the UK, despite its release six months ago, due to lack of customer interest. The airline has announced that it will cancel flights to Salerno in Manchester and Birmingham. These services were first announced in August 2024. Salerno itself is a historic port city in the southeastern part of Naples and serves as a hub for picturesque Italian destinations such as the Amalfi Coast, Pestam and Pompeii.
Alongside these route axes, Jet2 is increasing the frequency of flights in Naples. Since January 1, 2024, JET2 has introduced over 40 new routes covering Southern Europe and North Africa, but has had to cancel more than six from the same date. “We're looking forward to seeing you in the airlines,” said Anton Radchenko, founder of AirAdvisor. “Jet2 is consistently one of the UK's most punctual airlines, so these cancellations require passengers to explore Jet2's on-time performance and other options like EasyJet and Ryanair, which are not PAR.
“In addition, one of the most popular European beach destinations, the Amalfi Coast is closer to Salerno than Naples. With a difference of nearly 60 km, passengers are an extra hour and cost more on the ground.
“But on the plus side, Naples offers more flight options and is a larger hub, making them more attractive for travelers with flexible itineraries.”
Although these routes have not yet been released, their cancellations will immediately affect UK travelers seeking convenient access to Amalfi Coast via Jet2's holiday package, according to the mirror.
Travel experts say the decision reflects broader industry patterns. This is because airlines often change routes in response to changes in demand.
Radchenko advised to book early every time a new route is announced. Otherwise, the airline will later discard it, citing low interest. He emphasized that being proactive is essential as airline decisions are driven by demand.
As Jet2 expands its route to Naples, it is recommended to book as soon as possible, ideally within a few days of the announcement, to avoid potential inconveniences later.
He also pointed out that competition is likely that JET2 will provide a competitive price for flights to Naples as other airlines still operate flights to Salerno.
The spokesman commented: “As a successful business, we are constantly reviewing our flight program and adjusting as needed, allowing us to add flights and holidays depending on demand.
“Following this latest review, we have decided to withdraw services from Birmingham and Manchester airports to Salerno airports. If our customers are affected, we will contact you to let you know of options such as travel via Naples Airport, rebooking, or full refunds.
“With a great service programme from seven UK bases, including Birmingham and Manchester, to the Naples Airport, our customers and independent travel agents know there are still great options when it comes to accessing the area.”
