Birmingham Airport has announced major changes to its parking system by implementing a vehicle barrier-free setup using premium set-down and drop-off zones. This innovative switch is set to start with stepping down barriers in Elmdon's multi-store parking lot.
The airport is confident that removing these physical barriers will significantly mitigate vehicle flow and tackle crowds during peak hours. They employ sophisticated automatic license plate recognition (ANPR) technology, allowing the car to go out smoothly and keep traffic running.
Despite the more streamlined process, drivers should not forget to pay appropriate parking fees within 24 hours of departure. Payments are flexible in your AutoPay account, after payment at home, or on a regular on-site payment machine.
Nikki Baines, head of planning, transportation and strategy at Birmingham Airport, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming transition. “The new barrier-free system, which is scheduled to begin this spring, will simplify passenger drop-offs and enhance vehicle surface access by providing a faster experience.
Birmingham Airport is currently charging £6 for 0-15 minutes, £11 for 15-20 minutes and £17 for 20-25 minutes on premium drop-down sites.

The airport claims the move aims to reduce its cues and improve air quality, in line with its goal of achieving zero carbon by 2033.
“This further supports the drive to become zero carbon at the airport by 2033 and existing plans to manage and reduce the impact of air quality.”
