Greenland is the world's largest island and boasts beautiful scenery, but tourists are not what the regular country sees. Now they are moving to change that as part of their plans to diversify the economy. Currently, Greenland is heavily dependent on one industry and hopes to account for around 90% of the country's exports.

Towards the end of last year, the giant country has taken its first step by officially opening a new international airport in its already capital, Nuuk. Previous airports were not suitable for using larger passenger aircraft. However, today the runway at Nuuk International Airport extends to 2,200 meters and has a new terminal. Both features have broken restrictions the capital had with regard to connections to other destinations around the world. Airline route analysts say the airport's “enhanced facilities are essential for tourism and economic development.”

As of this year, many airlines have begun working at Nuuk, and United Airlines Will is set to begin non-stop flights from Newark, just outside New York on the US East Coast. The route will begin on June 14th and will initially run seasonally until September 25th, EuroNews reports.

Like Nuuk's exciting new plans, both Ilulissat in the north and Qaqortoq in the south have plans to house the international airport with similar facilities by next year.

Tourism in Greenland is already beginning to grow. In 2023, the country hit a record number of international visitors. Nrealely had 40,000 people flying to the country, but 76,000 people travelled in large numbers on the cruise ship.

Foreign tourism contributed DKK 1.9 billion (£268 million) to the economy, accounting for more than 1,000 jobs directly, according to Visit Greenland.

So what do you actually do on a huge island? One of Greenland's most powerful advantages is its natural environment and less crowded space. That location within the Arctic Circle means that travelers can be justly proud to venture into that far north.

The landscape of this country is also a great destination for adventure seekers – visitors take part in treats with towering icebergs and ancient glaciers where boats and kayaking can be explored.

For those who choose to relax, the country also covers you. The capital boasts many cultural and historical experiences, from taking a dip in the harbor, visiting one of its many spas, hiking, and observing the diverse wildlife found throughout the country.
