In February, CERC Movement hosted an insightful two-day workshop in collaboration with the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, Navigating Uncertainty: The Future of Migration and Inequality in a Changing World. (External link) (stias). The event brought together researchers from around the world in South Africa to explore the pressing issues of transitional governance, inequality and mobility in the face of growing global uncertainty.
The discussion, led by Anna Triandafirido, Canada's Chair of Excellence Research, has Igor Grossman, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Waterloo and Faisal Galba, an associate professor of sociology, migration and mobility at the African Institute, explored how immigrants can navigate important lives.
“Moving isn't just about boundaries and policies. It's a way for people to navigate those structures and confront barriers while finding opportunities. Technology plays a key role in this process.”
During the workshop, scholars engaged in a wealth of discussion about how they reconstructed transition patterns and policies around the world. The session explored topics such as the impact of climate change on evacuation, the evolving role of international organizations, and the intersection of migration and economic inequality. The event promotes interdisciplinary dialogue, with participants sharing diverse perspectives and research insights.
The event highlighted the importance of international academic partnerships in addressing the complexities of migration in times of uncertainty. As we look ahead, the insights generated during this workshop will continue to inform you of CERC Migration's research and engagement efforts.
The workshop was part of a well-known six-week fellowship on the future of human mobility and migration immersed in participants in the STIAS environment, which allowed us to gain a better understanding of how mobility affects people and planets. The Fellowship brings together key scholars to engage in high-level, interdisciplinary research on global agendas, further enhancing the collaboration between STIAS and CERC transitions.
