Kenya Airlines (KQ) and London Metropolitan University (London Met) have embarked on a transformative journey to reshape aviation education and workforce development through groundbreaking partnerships. The collaboration was officially sealed with the signature of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the prestigious KQ Pride Centre. The ceremony witnessed the presence of prominent stakeholders from both agencies, along with government representatives and aviation industry regulators, highlighting the strategic importance of the alliance.

Pioneering Industry-Academic Collaboration for Aviation Excellence

This innovative partnership demonstrates Kenya Airlines' unwavering commitment to filling the gap between industry and academia. By combining KQ's industry expertise with London MET's outstanding academic resources, the collaboration aims to nurture talent, improve employee skills and drive innovation in the aviation sector.

Through this initiative, KQ employees will have access to exclusive training programs, advanced academic opportunities, and pioneering research tailored to the aviation industry. This partnership reflects a common vision to foster a highly skilled workforce that can drive growth and transformation within the sector.

Speaking at the event, Alan Kirabuka, Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airlines, highlighted the potential for partnership transformation. “This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to innovation, excellence and the development of human capital. By investing in education and skill development, we can not only empower our employees, but also shape the future of aviation since Kenya.”

Educational Standards Salary Increase: Application for Higher Education Institution License

To ensure world-class educational standards, Kenya Airlines has applied for a higher education institution license from the Department of Technology and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). While awaiting approval, specialized aviation courses will be available only to KQ employees and benefit from first-class training and career development. As the government greenlights the programme, these courses will expand to more and more publicly, making aviation education more accessible and affordable across Kenya and its surrounding areas.

Tomsibo, Chief Human Resource Director at Kenya Airways, emphasized the partnership's focus on employee growth and development. “Our people are the backbone of our success. This partnership provides employees with the tools and knowledge that excels in their careers, and contributes to the continued success of Kenya Airlines. It is an investment in our most valuable asset: our talent.”

    Introducing cutting-edge aeronautics degree programs

As part of this strategic collaboration, a comprehensive suite of aviation-centric degree programs will be introduced. These include:

Master's Degree in Airline and Airport Corporate Management – Equipped with strategic skills for the evolving aviation landscape. Masters in Aviation Management in the Digital Age – Prepare experts for digital transformation in aviation operations. Airline Bachelor's Degree, Airport, Aviation Management – Building basic expertise for aspiring aviation professionals.

These programs are designed to meet the dynamic needs of the aviation industry and enhance students with the knowledge and skills needed for their leadership roles.

Unparalleled scholarship opportunities for KQ employees

Metropolitan University in London is committed to supporting the Kenya Airlines workforce by providing an extraordinary 70% scholarship to KQ employees with a bachelor's and master's degrees in aviation. In addition to financial aid, London Met offers important training resources, workshops and certificates. It also potentially expands the benefits of scholarships to families of KQ employees and promotes a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

Promotion of aviation innovation and workforce development

This strategic alliance is consistent with Kenya Airlines' vision, strengthening workforce capabilities, strengthening industrial relations and inspire innovation within the aviation sector. At the same time, it reflects the mission of the London Met to promote global collaboration and provide a transformative educational experience.

Celebrating the milestones of aviation education

The Moo signing ceremony was an important opportunity, bringing together influential figures from the Ministry of Education, Transport and Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives from industry regulators and the UK High Commissioner. Their participation underscored the importance of this partnership in advancing aviation education and workforce development.

A new era of learning, growth and innovation

Kenya Airlines and Metropolitan University in London are creating new courses for aviation education. The partnership is set up to stimulate a culture of continuous learning, innovation and excellence, ensuring that the aviation industry is capable of tackling future challenges with a highly skilled and capable workforce.

The collaboration not only became a milestone for Kenya Airlines and London, but also a major step forward for the aviation industry in Africa and beyond, setting new benchmarks for education, training and workforce development.
