EasyJet has announced that it will operate a new direct flight between the UK's Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) and Gran Canaria, the second most popular island in the Spanish Islands.
The new route will be operational twice a week on Mondays and Fridays in winter, showing an impressive strengthening of the link between the Canary Islands and the UK market.
We can see an expansion of existing connectivity for budget airlines. This already includes flights to Belfast, Bristol, Glasgow, London (Gatwick and Luton), Manchester and Edinburgh.
This latest announcement follows EasyJet's recent introduction of routes from London Southend and Birmingham.
EasyJet currently holds a 25% market share on flights from the UK to Carry during the winter and 15% in the summer, making the region an important part of the European network.
Data from EasyJet showed that between May and September last year, 64,747 British passengers were transported to Gran Canaria.
The Canary Islands are one of the UK's winter sun destinations on display in the fact that this number has swelled to 71,392 travelers during the winter season.
Last year, about 1 million British tourists visited Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria is a portion of nearly 6.3 million people who have visited the archipelago in total. That's a record number in itself.
UK visitors donated a total of 1.24 billion euros (£1.02 billion) to the local economy, with an average spending of 1,415 euros (£1,168).
“The ability to expand flight connectivity ensures that Gran Canaria remains an attractive destination for international visitors,” said Carlos Alamo, the island's Minister of Tourism.
“Everything suggests that 2025 will be a year full of opportunities for the people of Gran Canaria.”
EasyJet recently launched a new flight to Brittany's “undervalued” European seaside city Brest, with its two-week flights from London Gatwick since June 25th.
Further further, it operates new flights to beautiful African towns that need tourists most to boost its economy. EasyJet will begin flights from London Stansted and London Southend airports to Enfida in northeastern Tunisia in spring 2025.
In 2024, an impressive 5.1 million passengers traveled to Liverpool's John Lennon Airport. This is the highest number since 2011, up 21% from 2023. This solidified the airport's position as one of the top 10 busy airports outside of London.
