The Beitbridge Border Post has undergone a US$300 million overhaul, significantly improving trade and travel flows between Zimbabwe, its neighbours, and the broader international community. The upgrade introduces advanced technology, increased capacity and increased security and addresses years of crowding and delays at this key entry point. The project, developed through a public-private partnership between the Zimbabwean government and the Zinborders Consortium, has already led to dramatic reductions in customs clear times and has been aligned with the regional goals for seamless trade promotion.
Previously famous for its bottlenecks, Beitbridge clears up to 60% of its commercial freight within three hours compared to previous wait times ranging from 24 to 72 hours. With new terminals dedicated to freight, buses, pedestrians and private vehicles, the border efficiently handles around 200,000 trucks and more than 7 million travelers a year. The transformation has attracted attention from local stakeholders, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) and the South African Development Community (SADC), and is attempting to replicate success in border control.
