All Nippon Airways will become the first Japanese operator of Embraer's E2 family aircraft, following orders of up to 20 E190 E2S, as they have announced their commitments for up to 77 aircraft.
According to a stock exchange filing by Ana Parent Ana Holdings, the total value of the order, which consists of a mixture of wide-body aircraft and narrow aircraft from Airbus, Boeing and Embraer, stands at around 2.16 trillion ($14 billion) at list prices. ANA Holdings chief Shibata said the order represents “a catalyst for improving domestic flight profitability and improving the expansion of international flights, a field of future growth for airlines.”
The first E2 is scheduled to be distributed in 2028 and will be deployed on domestic routes operated by ANA. The order, which consists of 15 companies and another five options, will make ANA the latest Asia-Pacific operator for the E190 E2 after airlines such as Singapore-based Scoot and Virgin Australia.
Anna says the E2S will bridge demand for the 737, which houses around 166 passengers and a Havilland Dash 8 with around 74 seats.
Separately, ANA has placed fresh orders for the 18 Boeing 787-9S and converted an additional 5-9S option for international operations.
The order “in anticipating strong demand in Asia and North America and the re-expansion of Narita International Airport,” said ANA, which is sought to increase international capacity by 1.5 times by fiscal year 2030.
The latest commitment is added to existing orders for the 787 program, where the airline is the largest operator.
However, the airline has chosen GE Aviation's Genx, which is best for 18 new aircraft. This is a breakaway from the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine, which bolsters the existing 787-8 and -9 seconds fleet.
The ANA confirmed the options for the 10 737 Max 8S, and placed four more fresh orders of 737, with four more options.
Meanwhile, the low-cost unit Peach will become Japan's first operator of the Airbus A321XLR after signing three examples. The airline has also announced solid orders for the A321neos equipped with the 10 CFM International Leap-1A, delivering its first A321XLR in 2028.
Peach has made international expansion an important focus on short-term strategies and has recently begun direct flights between Osaka and Singapore. This is the longest route in the network.
