A passenger in the crash of a Toronto plane said “it's amazing that we're still here” after the plane turned upside down on the runway on Monday.
John Nelson told CNN he knew nothing wrong with the plane, calling it a typical flight between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Toronto said they noticed a lot of gusts of wind and snow on the runway as they approached.
“When we collided, it was very intense — it hit the ground and the plane lay down,” Nelson said, adding that he saw a “big fireball” from the left side of the plane. .
Nelson was in the 10th row of the aircraft, sitting in front of the wing. When the plane stopped, Nelson said he began screaming for people to leave.
“It was a ton of confusion,” he said.
Nelson and his seatmates were hanging upside down when the plane stopped. They unleashed themselves and landed on the ceiling of the aircraft before making a beeline for the door. The air smells like jet fuel.
“We tried to get out of there as soon as possible,” Nelson said. “It still smells like jet fuel.”
