Peter Dimba, Deputy Minister of Public Business Transport in Malawi, announced maintenance work at Muzzu Airport, extending the runway from 1,300 meters to 1,600 meters, enabling larger aircraft. Commercial flights that have been suspended in 2010 are scheduled to resume by March this year, and Malawi Airlines is expected to operate 72 Banbardia aircraft from the airport. This development matched President Lazarus Chakwella's national speech, emphasizing the rehabilitation of Muzz Airport and Colonga Aerodrome as part of the efforts to recover flights to northern Malawi. Flights to Koronga will resume later this year.
The government assumes these upgrades as a temporary solution, and has secured a long -term plan that prioritizes the construction of a new autonchova international airport near Equendeneni. Dimba has also been completed near the Lekomo port and emphasized updating the waterway transport project, including the modernization of water transport infrastructure. This Initiative, part of President Chakwella's widespread vision, aims to improve the nationwide connection with tourism and economic development in northern Malawi.
