Protests have intensified in major cities across Mozambique following Monday's announcement by the Constitutional Council that Daniel Chapo won the presidential victory with 65% of the vote. While urban areas are facing significant disruption, coastal and remote tourist destinations are currently reporting business as usual.

“This situation requires careful handling,” said ATTA® Membership CEO Kgomotso Ramothea. “Cities such as Maputo, Beira and Nampula have reported business closures and transport disruptions and seen violent protests, while reports from many of Mozambique's major tourist destinations, especially along the coast, The current situation suggests that these areas are not as affected by the riots.

Mozambique's coastline stretches over 2,535 miles along the Indian Ocean. Regions such as Vilanculo and Bazaruto Islands are currently reporting business as usual, but the situation may change.

For private car travelers from South Africa, the Ressano Garcia border crossing remains operational, but travelers are being forced to travel between South Africa and Mozambique ahead of further protests expected to be announced on January 1st. As a result, major traffic jams are occurring.

Travelers are strongly advised to confirm route and border crossing conditions with tourism operators before departure. “The situation is dynamic, so travelers need to stay informed and be flexible,” Ramotea emphasizes.

“Our industry partners on the ground are providing real-time updates, showing that the situation varies greatly from region to region. We are able to provide destination-specific guidance to all visitors. We advise you to maintain direct communication with your accommodation host and tour operator.”

Given the fluid nature of the situation, travelers are advised to:

Maintain close contact with tourism operators and accommodation hosts If possible, consider flying directly to your destination Check the status of border crossings before departure Through reliable news sources, such as official travel advisories Stay informed Check your travel insurance coverage and terms Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place Remain flexible Itineraries that take into account the fluid situation
