Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's largest airline group, has partnered with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to create a new national carrier, Air Congo.

Under the agreement, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo will own 51% of the company, while Ethiopian Airlines will own 49% and be responsible for its operations.

The project aims to strengthen air connectivity within the Democratic Republic of the Congo and across Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Taseu called the partnership an important milestone in the airline's strategy to strengthen air transport in Africa.

“The launch of Air Congo is an important step in our strategic plan to work with African governments to strengthen air transport across the continent. This partnership will improve connectivity between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central Africa. , investment, trade and tourism My heartfelt thanks to the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, all stakeholders and my esteemed colleagues for their efforts and cooperation in making this partnership a success. I would like to express my gratitude,” he said.

Air Congo began operations with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, operating domestic flights from seven airports in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ethiopian Airlines also provides aircraft leasing, technical and systems support, and training programs for Congolese personnel, including technicians, pilots, flight attendants, and sales staff.

The partnership is in line with Ethiopian Airlines' Vision 2035 strategy, which focuses on establishing a presence across Africa.

The airline has already established similar partnerships with Zambia Airways in Lusaka, ASKY Airlines in Lome and Malawi Airways in Lilongwe.

Ethiopian Airlines operates one of the most modern aircraft fleets on the continent, with Boeing 787s, 777s, and 737s, as well as aircraft such as Airbus A350s and de Havilland Q400s.

Mesfin said the airline's continued expansion highlights its commitment to strengthening Africa's aviation infrastructure and promoting regional integration.
