Cape Town to join SA F1 bid

Cape Town has positioned itself as a potential venue for an F1 Grand Prix, with plans to build a street circuit around Greenpoint's DHL Stadium.

Business Tech reports that Cape Town Grand Prix SA (CTGPSA) plans to submit its bid to the South African Tender Steering Committee. The company aims to bring F1 back to Japan for the first time in 30 years.

The proposed 5.7km circuit is in line with the growing global popularity of urban F1 racing, alongside iconic events in Monaco, Singapore and Miami.

CTGPSA highlights this trend and highlights the international appeal of city-based circuits. The group's qualifications include hosting motorsport events within the Green Point Sports and Tourism Precinct, most notably a successful Formula E race in 2023.

Meanwhile, Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed the proposal but stressed the importance of a thorough review process.

A F1 race in Cape Town could have a transformative impact on the economy. The 2023 Formula E event generated R2.13 trillion in direct and indirect expenditure.

However, as reported by Travel News, Cape Town is also home to a dedicated circuit being built near Fisante Kral Airport, as well as the historic Kyalami track near Johannesburg, which is undergoing renovations to secure FIA Grade 1 certification. It faces stiff competition from other venues, including the Grand Prix circuit.

South Africa last hosted an F1 race in 1993 at the Kyalami circuit.
