Plans to introduce direct air links between Africa and the Caribbean are gaining momentum, with regular routes expected to be launched in the coming months. This follows a groundbreaking non-stop flight from Nigeria to St. Kitts, followed by discussions underway to expand the route earlier this month. We will begin proposing connections with Algeria for the African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) in September. The initiative, led by Afreximbank and local stakeholders, aims to strengthen both tourism and trade across the continent.
Currently, there are no direct flights between South Africa and the Caribbean, but the proposed route will significantly improve connectivity to African travellers' destinations across the region, including Antigua and Barbada, Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago. This effort is part of Afreximbank's broader vision to promote the African-Caribbean ecosystem, encouraging cultural, commercial and diaspora ties. Several Caribbean countries already offer visa-free access to South African passport holders, positioning the region as an attractive emerging market for leisure and trade-focused travel.
