Qatar Airways expands Africa's strategic foothold through new deals and airport investments
Qatar Airways is strengthening its presence across Africa with a series of well-known investments and partnerships that reflect its ambition to become a key player in the continent's aviation future.
Most recently, the airline signed a new strategic partnership agreement with Kenya Airlines, paving the way for improved cooperation and connection. As part of the transaction, Qatar Airways will introduce a third daily flight between Doha and Nairobi, enhancing access between East Africa and the Gulf while supporting tourism, trade and business links.
In Rwanda, Qatar Airways already owns a 60% stake in Rwandaa, co-embeds the development of the $2 billion Bugesara International Airport, a project that is expected to turn Kigali into a regional air travel hub. The new airport will open in 2027 and is projected to handle up to 14 million passengers per year by 2032.
The airline's investment strategy also extends to South Africa, with a 25% stake in South Africa's regional airline Airlink. The partnership will provide access to more than 45 destinations across the region, further strengthening Qatar Airways' continental reach.
As global aviation moves into emerging markets, Qatar Airways' deepening involvement in Africa highlights its long-term commitment to the continent, not only as a passenger market but also as a key partner in infrastructure development and regional integration.
