Tourism has become Tanzania's largest foreign exchange earner, surpassing gold for the first time. According to the Bank of Tanzania's latest monthly economic review, tourism revenue totaled $3.92 billion for the year ending in May 2025, up from $3.63 billion the previous year. This growth accounts for more than half (55.1%) of all service-related revenues, highlighting an increasing economic impact of the sector.
International arrivals reached 2,170,360, rising from 1,961,870, driving revenue growth and historical gold exports at $3.83 billion. To support the continued growth of the sector, the Bank of Tanzania introduced a policy change on July 8, 2025, exempt tour operators from selected foreign exchange regulations. Operators can now use foreign currency to pay for services for non-resident tourists and purchase specialized cars locally. This is a mauve that is welcomed by industry stakeholders, which are important to stay competitive.
