For many people, holidays are not really a holiday unless the whole family is together. It includes furry, four-legged members. However, finding a resort that welcomes dogs can prove difficult. South Africa is still catching up when it comes to dog-friendly travel, according to Shaun Lamont, managing director of First Group Hotels and Resorts.

“Pet-friendly travel is the norm in Europe and North America, with thousands of hotels and resorts offering dog beds, pet menus and even spa treatments,” says Lamont. “But while South Africa's options may be limited right now, we are proud to change that.” And Qwantani, a scenic first group resort located on the banks of Stark Fontey Dam in the Free State, leads the pack. Long known for welcoming dogs, the hotel takes things to a whole new level with dedicated amenities specifically designed for dog guests.

From the moment the guests arrive, their dogs are treated like VIPs. The resort's new welcome pack ensures that your furry friends feel at home with a thoughtful selection of merchandise. The pack includes:

4 dog poop bags for small treats and biscuit waste management for each dog.

“It's a type of attention to detail that makes the guests travelling with their beloved dog feel valued,” says Lamont. “We believe everyone deserves a warm and welcoming experience. That includes furry guests because they understand that they are not just pets. They are family.”

To enhance convenience, other services offered include pet sitting, daily dog walks, and even curated adventure trails to help Pooch safely explore the natural environment. Next is the Gourmet Bonpet Treat menu, featuring everything from dog-friendly meals to chewy snacks.

With its panoramic views, large outdoor spaces and exceptional hospitality commitment of both human and dog companions, Qwantani is setting a new benchmark for dog-friendly travel in South Africa. And good news? Lamont says they are considering welcoming the popular La Montagne Resort now, just as they would welcome their human best friends. Look at this space.

“As dog-friendly hospitality begins to take off locally and the demand for hotels and resorts to provide the right facilities increase, we want to create an experience where dog owners can create lasting, magical memories with their four-legged families,” he concludes. “Our goal is for both the dog and its owner guests to be truly welcomed and praised, encouraging others in the industry to not only be tolerated but to follow suit.”
