For many, summer vacation is an opportunity to escape and make the most of the sunshine at the beach or at least the pool. However, as temperatures continue to fly around much of Europe, heading to a cool destination and taking a break from the heat may sound more appealing. Temperatures in the UK are forecast to go up to 30c again this week.
Travel agency Kayak discovered an increase in searches for “cool” destinations this July, as many Brits are looking for alternatives to beat the heat. But if you're looking for a last minute break, one city proves that it's a little cheaper than others for a chilled holiday this summer.
Kayak's data shows that searches for flights to Krakow, Poland, have increased 74% this month compared to March, with return flights from London or Manchester currently at £122.
Krakow, former Poland's capital, is a popular destination for travelers all year round, but July is not a place you might consider heading for summer holidays, especially as it is known to be one of the city's most wettest months.
Speaking of weather, the official Visitkrakow website states: “Krakow's climate is typical of the west coast at the central latitude of most continents, and is often referred to as the ocean, which is generally characterized by warm but not hot summers.”
There is a lot to do indoors when it rains, but there is no shortage of options for enjoying the cool outdoor weather, whether visiting a historic church or an old royal residence at the Wahel royal castle.
From a boat tour across the Vistula River, go for a drink at Rynek Główny, Europe's largest medieval square, and also features the annual summer jazz festival, which runs from June to September.
If you find that you can afford a long weekend by plane from the UK, it's an ideal destination, but pack an umbrella and a waterproof jacket in case it rains.
