Often called Rome in Portugal, Braga has gained a reputation for its pivotal role during the Roman Empire. For history lovers, Braga is a must-see destination, boasting historic architecture among its ancient ruins, breathtaking architecture and numerous attractions.

Braga was recognized as Europe's leading emerging tourist destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards. Although direct comparisons are difficult, Benoit's facilities suggest that the city attracts around 7 million tourists each year.

This exceeds nearly 5.5 million visitors and 4.9 million visitors to Lisbon in 2022, according to statistical data.

Visiting Portugal describes Braga as a vibrant city and one of the oldest cities in the country. Founded over two thousand years ago by the Roman Emperor Augustus, this one was located on one of the major Roman roads on the Iberian Peninsula and served as the administrative centre of the imperial.

It was then named the capital of the province of Galesia, Rome, which corresponds to what is now Galicia.

The oldest Cathedral of Braga in Portugal was built in the 12th century by the parents of the first kings of Portugal. Today, cities continue to be one of the country's major religious hubs.

One of the must-see sites in Braga is the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus. It presents the monumental staircase and offers spectacular panoramic views of the city.

For those seeking authentic Portuguese cuisine, Tabique is famous for its slow-cooked meat dishes and is a must-see.

Beyond city restrictions, Donna Julia is praised for her stylish interiors and farm-to-table dishes, as CN Travelers highlights.

Braga offers a variety of accommodation options, including the luxurious Bracara guesthouse, Vila Gale Collection Braga, Hotel Mercure Braga Centro, and Melia Braga Hotel and Spa.

Porto Airport is the gateway to Braga. Airlines that offer direct flights to Porto include Ryanair, EacalJet, Tap Air Portugal, Azores Airlines, BA EuroFlyer, British Airways, Qatar Airways and JET2.

A trip from Porto to Braga takes about 45 minutes by train or 40 minutes by car via A3. If you travel by bus, the journey can take up to an hour.
