The British holiday maker is Gobsmacked at the cost of living in Tenerife and shares his disbelief in a video of Tiktok, which is now attracting attention from people. The man passing through Deebolar on Tiktok after experiencing the severe price difference in Tenerife, declared that the UK “no longer means anything to him.”
He was particularly impressed with the affordable prices of groceries compared to his home town, noting his contrast with popular everyday items. He explained:
“I mean, it's out of brand, but who's going to throw it? It's like 70p/80p. These bottles are 50p. and 1.50 euros for 8 liters of water, and it's like 1.20 pounds.
“(The) UK hasn't seen me again. It could be six Desperados for 1.71 euros. It's also one. I might not have a clue. Anyway, look at this, 8 liters of water, 2 liters of fantas, the price – 2.39 euros.”
When he introduced the set of products to the table, he added: “All of this table, perhaps £5 or £6.
His video captioned, “After this, I have to go back to the costs of a living crisis.” It then sparked a conversation among viewers and became word of mouth. Many were surprised, but others felt compelled to share some important insights with him.
“The Canary Islands have the lowest salary in Spain. This is not a paradise you think. Our rent is more than half of our salary,” he lamented.
Another frustration is, “cheap for you. Unfortunately, Spanish salaries are low every day and prices are rising with more taxes.”
A third party said, “There's no objectively cheap in this world. What's cheap for you may be cheap for the locals. This applies everywhere.”
Curiosity writes, “Which supermarket is this? It's the supermarket I'm going to next week.” The fifth opinion writes, “The UK is expensive. Spain is always cheap.”
EasyFX highlights that Tenerife is seen as an attractive alternative to living in the UK. The report states, “On average, rents in Tenerife are much cheaper than in the UK.
“The Santa Cruz de Tenerife family, a one-bedroom apartment in the island's capital, usually costs between 500 and 700 euros (415-580 pounds) per month, compared to £1,200 to £1,500 which you will need to spend on renting an apartment in London from £1,200 to £1,500.
“Leading costs on Tenerife, like most places in Europe, vary by location and type of property you decide. Popular areas like Santa Cruz and La Laguna, as well as tourist hotspots like Los Cristianos and Costa Adeges tend to have higher rental prices.
“For those who prefer to cook at home, Tenerife's grocery prices are another highlight and far more affordable than in the UK. Supermarkets like Mercadona, Hiperdino and Riddle offer competitive prices, while local markets offer a large selection of fresh produce and local specialties.
“Shopping at farmers' markets across Tenerife can bring fresher produce at lower prices and is an attractive option if you want to stick to your budget without compromising on quality.”
Meanwhile, the average salary on Tenerife is estimated to be around 32,239 euros (£27,849.18) per year, with occupations such as healthcare, education and technology typically operating from 1,500 euros (£1,295.75) to 2,000 euros (£1,727.63). Although wages in the Canary Islands have grown significantly since 1978, it has been reported to be lagging behind the Spanish national average.
