The Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Organization (Bagasoo) reported significant improvements in aviation safety in West Africa on Wednesday, with a 60% compliance record.
Jailza Soraya, executive director of the organization, highlighted Bagasseo's achievements at Bagasseo Safety Conference 2025 in Abuja.
According to Soraya, Bagasoo's efforts have led to a noticeable increase in safety compliance from 40% to 63% since its establishment in 2009.
She highlighted the importance of sustainable efforts in building technical capacity and strengthening monitoring mechanisms across member states.
She said the organization is working to harmonize regulations in Bag countries, citing fluctuations in safety regulations as a major challenge.
Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keeamo praised Bagasse for his contributions to affect aviation safety in the region.
Keyamo said the organization has evolved into a model of regional cooperation, a model of security monitoring, regulatory harmony and capacity building across member countries.
Similarly, Col. Chris Najomo, Director of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Chairman of the Bagasse Soo Board, praised the organization's visionary leadership and strategic partnership.
Najomo called for continued cooperation, innovation and consolidation of profits to achieve a safer and more resilient aviation sector.
However, stakeholders in the aviation sector called for harmony of safety regulations and standards in West Africa's sub-regions.
The event highlighted the importance of regional integration and learning in achieving a more effective and harmonious aviation system in Africa.
