A Jets Setter, who often travels the Earth on various holidays and backpacking trips, shares one habit he “saved” when he is stuck at the airport or when he can't contact anyone.
Landing at airports in a new country is usually the cause of excitement – it can indicate a start to a holiday, an exciting business trip, chickens, bucks and solo holidays, etc. – but if your phone isn't working properly, you can quickly change the stress if you can't book a taxi or find hotel information.
In a post on Reddit entitled “What saved me when my ESIM got active at the airport,” Keen Travel Buff explained: “I saw other people posting about the same issue.
“I was landing in Istanbul and hoping for ESIM to kick in, but I couldn't get online or call Uber.
But thankfully, he urged others to take aggressive steps to alleviate the shortcomings of this common situation “half-heartedly.”
He continued. “Before the trip I screenshot the map route to the hotel and downloaded Google Maps' local city maps offline.
“To be honest, I made it half-baked, but that was the only reason I didn't get stuck and panicked. Seriously, I'll download your map. It takes 20 seconds and works every time.”
In the comments section, people shared their thoughts. One advised: “Activate e-sim before you leave. It starts when you connect to the tower of the country you visited.”
Someone else shared their tips. “This is great advice, I started this as soon as the internet came on.
“One other great idea is to get an app that you can use when you don't have a connection.
“You can use some great offline navigation apps without data connections. Google Maps, here Wego, Osmand and Sygic are popular options offering turn-by-turn directions and detailed maps that allow navigation even when offline.”
Another Reddit user added:
“The download takes a minute, but avoid a lot of stress later. You have to always prepare for a 'no signal' nightmare. ”
In an additional post, men repeated this habit and added extra steps that people might benefit. He titled his advice: “One of the things I do now when I land in a new country all the time.”
He explained:
“It saved me multiple times when my Sim didn't work, if the Wi-Fi failed, or when I had to show my taxi driver something fast.
“It takes 30 seconds and removes so much stress, especially after a long flight when your brain is running with smoke.”
