Travel expert Simon Calder shares insights as to whether it is safe to visit Cyprus as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to escalate. Calder said he was on his upcoming trip to Cyprus and was flooded with messages from people involved who are now squeezing whether or not to travel.
The UK Foreign Office updated its travel guidance on the Mediterranean Island country on June 13, adding warnings to the “Safety and Security” section. The FCDO noted that the conflict between Israel and Iran could escalate rapidly and affect the wider region. Travelers are encouraged to continue to provide information through local and international media, stay vigilant and follow the directions of local authorities.
Despite the warning, Calder convinced travelers that Cyprus was a safe destination.
“I didn't hesitate to travel to Cyprus tomorrow regarding the Middle Eastern conflict I've observed over decades,” he told the Independent.
He added that the wider eastern Mediterranean region, including Türkiye and Greece, also appears to be stable now. “I talked to people on the ground.
Speaking outside the London consulate with the Republic of Cyprus' High Commissioner, Calder also worked on the recent evacuation of British citizens from Israel.
On Monday (June 23), the RAF flew 63 British citizens from Tel Aviv due to continued hostility between Israel and Iran. Foreign Secretary David Lamy told Commons that evacuees were taken to Cyprus on RAF A400 transport planes and later returned to the UK. He confirmed that additional evacuation flights were planned.
The UK Foreign Office advises all trips to Israel amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
