One tourist shared something like it was in Europe's poorest country. However, he recommends that certain travelers visit it for certain reasons. There are 50 countries in Europe, many of which are popular holiday destinations for the British, with outstanding examples such as Spain, Portugal and Italy. However, there are some things that are often overlooked.
The poorest country in Europe is Moldova, based on many metrics. Some people in the UK are unable to even find this small country on the map of the continent and do not consider visiting it. However, Tiktok users and avid world travelers exploring alongside Harry explained why Moldova deserves a visit for one particular reason that stood out to him. Moldova is the home of fascinating Soviet history, he says. Moldova was a former Soviet republic and declared independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, there has been tension between Russian and Western attitudes in small countries.
Moldova is sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, similar to countries such as Albania, Denmark and Scotland. You can fly directly from the UK to Moldova and fly from the capital, London Luton Airport to Cininau International Airport.
According to tourist Harry, Moldova's highlight is Soviet history, but many things stood out to him. Explaining how safe he felt in Moldova in the clip, he states: “After a few days in Moldova, I was completely fine.”
“Moldova is actually one of my favourite places I've visited. If you're interested in history, especially Soviet communist history, this must become the place you visit.”
He also revealed that trips to Moldova are “very affordable” in terms of food, drinks, transportation and accommodation. In fact, he called it the “cheapest” place he'd ever visited.
He also described the locals as “friendly enough” but noted that he saw a bit of homelessness while in a country where some visitors might feel “uncomfortable.” He went on to explain that he felt like he was really visiting a new location, not just a tourist hotspot.
Moldova is not a popular holiday destination, but there are some things visitors do there. Among the top attractions are the underground Kulikowa Winery, Dendrariu Park, Bendelli Fortress, and Cathedral Lana Nana Stardom Nurui.
According to the UK Foreign Office, it is not recommended to travel to a specific part of Moldova, where everything is known as Transnistria. “There is extensive military activity in Ukraine, including some near Moldova's borders,” says FCDO. “Transnistria is out of control of the Moldovan government.
“The ability to provide FCDO support is very limited and will be more restrictive if there is military action at the border of Moldobau Crane.”
Transnistra is in breakaway state, but is internationally recognized as part of Moldova. The long land is located to the east of the country. However, this is far from the country's capital, Chisinau.
