Tourists flock to millions of people each year, enjoying the white sandy beaches and stunning natural beauty, but those who want to get a little closer to their home are pleased to learn that there are actually European alternatives just a short distance from the UK. A beach town in southern Spain – the southernmost town in mainland Europe – can do very well to believe you are 8,000 miles away.
Tarifa is actually only nine miles from north of Africa and is often referred to as “Bali of Europe” thanks to its impressive sandy beaches. It is also often referred to as the capital of Europe's kitesurfing. According to a travel influencer with Rafa, Tarifa “feels like a tropical paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It feels like Bali in Europe!”
Tarifa is located in Andalusia's province of Cadiz and crosses the Strait of Gibraltar, facing Costa de Larus (“Coast of Light”) and Morocco. The only part of Europe is far south than the islands that include the Greek island of Gabdos. In fact, the North African capitals of Algiers and Tunis are actually north of Tarifa.
Playa de Bologna Beach is one of the most popular beaches, but Playa de Los Reims is the place to find the most wind power sports. At Waikiki Beach Bar you can find that ultimate Bali-like experience along with that Umbelella. Meanwhile, Aloha Bar offers cocktails for just 3 euros (£2.50).
However, you can see it beyond the beach only. Important landmarks include the well-preserved Guzman Castle near the port, built in 960 by the order of the Caliph Abdor Rahman III.
The old town is home to not only nightclubs, but also delicious tapas bars and local shops. This is a place where tourists and locals tend to gather.
Tarifa is located within the InterContinental Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve, a well-known location for viewing migratory birds. Storks can be seen crossing the straits in spring and fall, but common species such as dolphins, sperm whales and orcas can watch whales and dolpin.
According to Skyscanner, Britons looking to experience Tarifa from themselves can fly with Ryanair from Luton Airport to Malaga (AGP) for just 61 pounds. There is a direct bus from Malaga Airport to Arguesilas, leaving every 30 minutes until 9pm local time. There is a bus from Gibraltar to Arguesilas, from Lanea Bus Station, a 5-minute walk from the airport.
