Bahrain's national airline, Gulf Air, celebrated the success of its first flight to Nairobi, Kenya. The important opportunity took place on June 3, 2025. The event was commemorated with a special event at Jomokenyatta International Airport, including a traditional water salute that welcomed the aircraft upon landing. This new route represents the reestablishment of a key link between Bahrain and the Kenya capital. Gwan Air previously connected until 2012.

The celebratory event featured a ritual reception attended by senior officials from Gulf Air and Jomokenyatta International Airport. This new air bridge promises to increase connectivity for business and leisure travelers between Bahrain, East Africa and destinations across the country. The arrival of flights to Nairobi marks the pinnacle of several months of planning and preparation as part of Gulf Air's broader network expansion strategy.

    Gulf Air strengthens international relations

Adding Nairobi to Gulf Air's growing network underscores the airline's commitment to expanding its footprint in Africa. The continent represents the great potential for growth in air travel. Gulf Air Group CEO Jeffrey Go highlighted this at the first ceremony, saying:

“The launch of Nairobi Services is an important milestone in Gulf Air's strategic growth journey. Africa represents an important growth market for airlines, and expansion into the continent reflects our long-term vision to create a wider, connected network that meets the evolving needs of passengers and contributes to regional development.”

The reintroduction of direct flights between Bahrain and Kenya represents a strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries. Nicolas Bodeau, managing director of the Kenya Airports Authority, welcomed the development. Bodeau said: “This new partnership not only strengthens the relationship between Kenya and the Kingdom of Bahrain, but also reaffirms Nairobi's position as a gateway to Africa. The new services will increase connectivity, create opportunities for trade and tourism, and provide greater options for passengers.”

    Economic impact and future growth

The new Nairobil Route is expected to bring great economic benefits to both countries. In Bahrain, it opens new trade, investment and tourism channels along with East Africa's largest economy. In Kenya, the connection provides easy access to the Gulf region and beyond through the extensive network of Gulf Airlines. Business travelers, tourists and freight operators will all benefit from the increased connectivity and convenience provided by direct services.
