African Travel Indaba 2025 gathered the best in sightseeing, and Aha Hotels and Lodges proudly stood out – handmade lanyards for their dynamic presence as well as meaningful celebrations of African culture through small but impressive details.

These vibrant, African-themed straps worn by the AHA team throughout the event were more than just functional accessories. They were a tribute to the five homesteads that formed the heartbeat center of Lesedi Cultural Village, the flagship of the AHA portfolio. Each strap was a living heritage meticulously handmade by two incredibly talented women who embody the cultural richness of their destination.

Flora Mappaira, originally from Limpopo, joined Lesedi in 1995. What began as a cultural role quickly evolved into a deep passion for beadwork. Not only does Flora create beautiful beadwork pieces, she also teaches guests the basics of crafting and provides practical connections with the culture she cherishes.

Ria Kabini, a native of Mpumalanga, began her beadwork journey in 1982. A natural artist, Leah has arrived at Lessedi with an already impressive portfolio, further honing his skills in including personalized bead names and jewelry. Her work is a vibrant representation of African storytelling through craft.

“We wanted to showcase something meaningful this year, but Flora and Leah allowed that. These straps are more than souvenirs. They represent a commitment to authentic cultural preservation and community empowerment.” – Deidre Ward, Executive Sales and Marketing at Aha Hotels and Lodges.

Lucky people can receive one of these limited edition straps as more than just a memento. They carried heritage, creativity and the stories of incredible women who continue to keep these traditions alive.

By combining tradition with tourism, Aha Hotels & Lodges continues to advocate for responsible travel and meaningful guest experiences across its diverse portfolio. This simple yet influential gesture at Indaba reminded everyone that some of the most powerful stories are told not only through places but through people.
