Ethiopian airlines and GE Aerospace have strengthened their long-standing cooperation with signing two important agreements on the supply and maintenance of Genx and GE9X engines. The Ethiopian airline confirmed the purchase of 11 Genx engines for the new B-787 aircraft, increasing the total number of fleet planes equipped with this advanced technology from 19 to 30. At the same time, the airline has updated its commitment to eight GE9X engines that power the B-777/9 Fleet.
Both contracts include a comprehensive technical support package that covers engine maintenance, repairs and overhauls, highlighting the shared goal of ensuring high performance and operational continuity. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, stressed that the collaboration is important for maintaining the leadership position of airlines in Africa and connecting the continent with other parts of the world with a focus on efficiency, innovation and sustainability.
Russell Stokes, president and CEO of Ge Aerospace's Commercial Engines and Services, expressed his satisfaction in supporting Ethiopian Airlines on its mission to develop sustainable aviation, which began in 2003, to continue the partnership.
Except for the Boeing 777X family, the GE9X engine represents the industry's efficiencies and power peaks, offering a 10% improvement in specific fuel consumption and significant emission reductions compared to its predecessor, the GE90-115B. Genx, a cornerstone of aviation technology for over a decade, has accumulated over 62 million flight times, and GE Aerospace's bestselling engine still carries two-thirds of the current B-787 fleet in that category. Both engines are certified for use in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), and are in line with the increasing environmental compatibility requirements for the sector.
