As South Africa recovers from global economic pressures, the tourism sector is emerging not only as a recovery mechanism, but as a dynamic driver of inclusive and sustainable growth.
In 2024, the country welcomed more than 10 million international visitors, increasing 28% from the previous year, injecting billions of rand into the local economy, stimulating key sectors such as hospitality, transportation, culture and retail. This revival has strengthened tourism's contribution of approximately 3.7% to national GDP, with the 2025 forecast showing even greater potential.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille recently said, “Tourism is more than just leisure time. It is a lifeline for millions of South Africans.
“From small towns to big cities, tourism-related activities empower local entrepreneurs, support cultural heritage and create jobs in all states,” she added.
Renee Hill, MD, of IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management (IIEHSM).
“The tourism industry currently maintains more than 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs nationwide, making it one of the most accessible employment sectors in South Africa.
“Our unique natural landscapes, vibrant cultural experiences and warm hospitality continue to maintain a strong draw in a highly competitive global market. Global tourism trends in favor of authentic, sustainable travel are well set up to benefit from a new wave of environmentally and socially conscious travelers.”
As such, all the courses offered by the school are increasingly important and essential for those looking for a career in the tourism industry.
Hill said: “The government's continued investment in infrastructure, training and destination marketing is expected to generate another 500,000 jobs by 2030, and IIEHSM wants to ensure that graduates are ready to incorporate any of the roles that will be available over the next five years.”
IIEHSM currently offers eight different courses, including a bachelor's degree in IIEHSM Services Management. IIEHSM Advanced Certificate in Hospitality Management.
